How COVID-19 changed the way we travel in Malaysia?

2 min readSep 6, 2021

Fact. The longest streak I have managed to stay at home is close to 3 months. And I am glad I can still find activities to do on a daily basis.

What about you?

COVID-19 has changed our lifestyle so much ! Instead of buying new clothes and shoes, I assume these days people would incline towards buying snacks or home improvement ! Would love to gather some data to analyze that!

Anyway, did you know that Google offers data from their Google Map for you to visualize how your community is moving around differently due to COVID-19? Here’s where you can access the data.

I created a Tableau dashboard based on the mobility report.

I have also used the data from KKM’s github to visualize new COVID-19 cases and recovered case.

Well, as expected, we see a 17% increase in Residential. Since most of us are working from home now, there’s a 27% decrease. And because of that, people tend to travel lesser using public transport. It’s could also be due to preference in travelling using individual’s car for safety purposes and due to lockdown restrictions. There is a typo in the graph above. And as expected there is a decrease by 37% for Retail and Recreation as they are not allowed to operate during the lockdown period. There is also a 30% decrease in park.

So, is this something you have expected? Personally it’s pretty much what I have expected. But there’s one thing that is pretty obvious to be observed. Despite the decrease in activities for these places, we are seeing seemingly never ending increase in COVID-19 cases here in Malaysia.

What went wrong?
